Today we offer portraits and still life photographs of the intricate details and outfits from our Multicultural Extravaganza – an annual celebration of the college’s cultural diversity. The Student National Medical Association hosted the night of food, fashion, and talent performances from students and faculty. The Multicultural Extravaganza is a unique high energy event that fosters comradely and provides the opportunity to experience the cultures represented here at the university, but also OU-HCOM. Our community of underrepresented minority students reflect key priorities of the college’s mission by embracing diversity and improving the well-being of underserved populations. Have a great weekend! #multiculturalextravaganza #ouhcom #CareLeadsHere #OhioUniversity #diversity #inclusion #underserved
In celebration of Black History Month, we are sharing images of Harold Thompson, D.O., who was the Heritage College’s first African American faculty member, and began teaching here in 1979, just three years after the college’s first incoming class. He was the first director of the college’s groundbreaking Center of Excellence program, and also served as Athens County coroner from 2008-2014. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory #OUHCOM #CareLeadsHere #OhioUniversity #Osteopathic #OsteopathicMedicine #MedSchool #MedStudent #ThrowBackThursday
Our Heritage College mobile clinic began operating in 1994 and has played an important role in providing quality medical care services to residents of Southeast Ohio. As part of the Heritage College's Community Health Program, the mobile clinics travel throughout southeast Ohio, providing clinics at churches, community centers and schools. The mobile clinic is also used for free medical clinics, immunization clinics, adult health screenings, women's health screening clinics and more. Our clinics are staffed with a certified nurse practitioner, a registered nurse and an assistant coordinator. #CareLeadsHere #ruralhealthcare #underserved #OUHCOM #CHP #CommunityHealthProgram #ohiouniversity
“Close to the end of my second year in college, sitting in one of my classes, I got a call, and they said, “You have it.” It was the office staff calling to tell me I had Fabry’s disease. That threw everything into high gear. I had just been given a diagnosis where my life span would be reduced to about 40 years. At the time I had been offered a scholarship, a full ride with salary, at the University of Cincinnati, to get my Ph.D. Then about a year and a half into the program, they found a treatment for Fabry’s. It doesn’t cure it, but it will extend my life to a normal life span. And I was just like - wow, now what? It was sort of like that movie with Queen Latifah, where she gets diagnosed with cancer and then at the end, she doesn’t have it. To have something taken away from you, to want something so bad, and to get that back, it’s amazing.” #HumansofOUHCOM # careleadshere #ouhcom #ohiouniversity #medstudent #fabryDisease -Scott Wong, OMS-III
Our very own Tiffany D. Downs, OMS-II, shared some insight about student volunteerism: “On February 9th a group of 25 first and second year students volunteered at the HAPCAP Foodbank in Logan. We packed 800 boxes of food to be given to residents of Hocking, Athens, and Perry Counties to aid in the relief of food insecurity. This opportunity is one of many that our students participate in on a monthly basis as part of our mission to not only increase the awareness of Osteopathic Medicine and its principles, but to also give back to the region that harbors the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Since August 2018 our students on the Athens campus alone have donated over 3,000 hours in community service in and around Athens Co. We at HCOM and the other 34 DO schools refer to these donated hours as TOUCH hours -Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health (TOUCH). Other places TOUCH hours have been completed include Habitat For Humanity, Red Cross, Ohio Health Hospice Care, and Live Healthy Appalachia.” #TOUCH #communityhealth #HAPCAP #foodbank #CareLeadsHere #OhioUniversity #medstudents #appalachia
